Updates after man ’threatened to set himself on fire’ in Bromley bank

Good Afternoon. We received reports this afternoon that the pedestrianised area of Bromley High Street had been closed due to a man threatening to self harm. Police attended and found a man had entered a bank and ’doused himself in petrol, threatening to kill himself’ the man was subsequently arrested. Cordons are still in place.

Marylebone

Marylebone - so good they named it once but pronounced it seven different ways.

Marylebone is an area in the City of Westminster North of Oxford Street and South of Regents Park. Edgware Road forms the Western boundary. Portland Place forms the eastern boundary with the area known as Fitzrovia.

Marylebone gets its name from a church, called St Mary's, that was built on the bank of a small stream or bourne called the Tyburn. The church and the surrounding area later became known as St Mary at the bourne, which over time became shortened to its present form Marylebone.

Today the area is mostly residential with a stylish High Street. It is also notable for its Arab population on its far western border around Edgware Road.

Marylebone station, opened in 1899, is the youngest of London's mainline terminal stations, and also one of the smallest, having opened with half the number of platforms originally planned.

Originally the London terminus of the ill-fated Great Central Main Line, it now serves as the terminus of the Chiltern Main Line route.

The underground station is served by the Bakerloo Line, opening on 27 March 1907 by the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway under the name Great Central (following a change from the originally-intended name Lisson Grove). It was renamed Marylebone in 1917.

It is one of the original stations of the Metropolitan Railway (MR), the world's first underground railway, opened in 1863.

Church of the Annunciation:   The Church of the Annunciation, Marble Arch, is a Church of England parish church designed by Sir Walter Tapper. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Halkin Hotel:   The Halkin (styled as The Halkin by COMO) is a 5-star hotel.
Home House:   Home House is a Georgian town house at 20 Portman Square.
Hyde Park Corner:   At the other end of Park Lane from Marble Arch, Hyde Park Corner has struck terror into many a learner driver.

InterContinental London:   InterContinental London Park Lane is a luxury 5-star hotel.

Knightsbridge:   Knightsbridge was originally a small hamlet, between the villages of Chelsea (Chelsey), Kensington (Kensing town) and Charing. In the time of Edward I, the manor of Knightsbridge appertained to the abbey of Westminster. It was named after a crossing of the River Westbourne, which is now an underground river.

Royal Artillery Memorial:   The Royal Artillery Memorial is a stone memorial at Hyde Park Corner, dedicated to the First World War casualties of the Royal Regiment of Artillery.
Somerset House, Park Lane:   Somerset House was an 18th-century town house on the east side of Park Lane, where it meets Oxford Street, in the Mayfair area of London. It was also known as 40 Park Lane, although a renumbering means that the site is now called 140 Park Lane.
Southbank International School Westminster:   Other independent school which accepts students between the ages of 11 and 18.
Speakers’ Corner:   Speakers’ Corner is in the northeast corner of Hyde Park.
St Paul’s Church:   St Paul’s Church is an Anglican church of the Anglo-Catholic tradition located at 32a Wilton Place.
St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School:   Voluntary aided school (Primary) which accepts students between the ages of 3 and 11.
The Royal College of Nursing:   Higher education institutions
The St Marylebone CofE School:   Academy converter (Secondary) which accepts students between the ages of 11 and 18. Admissions policy: Comprehensive (secondary).
Tyburn:   Tyburn was a village of Middlesex close to the current location of Marble Arch and the southern end of Edgware Road.
Wellington Arch:   Wellington Arch is located to the south of Hyde Park at the western corner of Green Park.
Wetherby Senior School:   Other independent school which accepts students between the ages of 11 and 18.
Willans Farm:   Marylebone Park Farm was, before the construction of Regent's Park, in the possession of Mr Thomas Willan.

Cary's New And Accurate Plan of London and Westminster (1818) FREE DOWNLOAD
Cary's map provides a detailed view of London. With print date of 1 January 1818, Cary's map has 27 panels arranged in 3 rows of 9 panels, each measuring approximately 6 1/2 by 10 5/8 inches. The complete map measures 32 1/8 by 59 1/2 inches. Digitising this map has involved aligning the panels into one contiguous map.

John Rocque Map of London (1762) FREE DOWNLOAD
John Rocque (c. 1709–1762) was a surveyor, cartographer, engraver, map-seller and the son of Huguenot émigrés. Roque is now mainly remembered for his maps of London. This map dates from the second edition produced in 1762. London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. His widow continued the business after his death. The map covers central London at a reduced level of detail compared with his 1745-6 map.
