Mary Beaumont | Wordpress comment (July 16, 2021) I have always wondered why my Grandmothers brother had "Vere" as his second name. Was it a common name back in the day ? This comment was posted on The Underground Map blog. Clicking the link will take you to the blog page |
Della Torra | Wordpress comment (June 30, 2020) I have found this very interesting to read. My family resided in the area at the beginning of the 1800's, first at Circus Street (now Enford St) , listed in 1826 on a baptism held at St Mary's Bryanston Square (Charlotte Allaway b.1826). The family then moved to 2 Nelson's Place - again found in the St Mary's baptism records of their daughter b. Nov 1827 and listed as her death place in Feb 1829. Nelson's Place I can't find listed anywhere BUT, I believe it was the previous name to Virgil Place.....as the next child born (another Charlotte) was at 2 Virgil Place. Could be correct? The Allaway family (namely John a lamplighter and his wife Jemima), resided at 2 Virgil Place for the next 40 +years at least, with their son (my grandfather) Charles Allaway b. 1841 listing 2 Virgil Place on his marriage certificate on 30 July 1865. Wendy Added: 22 Mar 2024 15:33 GMT | Polygon Buildings Following the demolition of the Polygon, and prior to the construction of Oakshott Court in 1974, 4 tenement type blocks of flats were built on the site at Clarendon Sq/Phoenix Rd called Polygon Buildings. These were primarily for people working for the Midland Railway and subsequently British Rail. My family lived for 5 years in Block C in the 1950s. It seems that very few photos exist of these buildings. Reply |

Might they be of interest or should I just dispose of them? There are 4 copies seemingly from the one single acetate example. Seems a shame to just junk them as the level of detail is exquisite. No worries if of no interest, but thought I’d put it out there. Reply |
