Fairyland, 92 Tottenham Court Road London circa 1905

Contemporary view of the area - viewing direction is appoximate

During the period leading up to and during the First World War, 92 Tottenham Court Road was the location of a shooting range called Fairyland.

In 1909, it was reported in a police investigation that the range was being used by two Suffragettes in a possible conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Herbert Asquith.

It was the place where, in 1909, Madan Lal Dhingra practised shooting prior to his assassination of Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie.

Other residents of India House and members of Abhinav Bharat practised shooting at the range and rehearsed assassinations they planned to carry out.

It was also the place where, with regard to in R v Lesbini (1914), Donald Lesbini shot Alice Eliza Storey. R v Lesbini was a case that established in British, Canadian and Australian law that, with regard to voluntary manslaughter, a reasonable man always has reasonable powers of self-control and is never intoxicated

The shooting range was owned and run by Henry Stanton Morley (1875-1916).

Goodge Street

Goodge Street station on London Underground's Northern Line, opened on 22 June 1907.

It was originally called Tottenham Court Road but changed to the present name on 3 September 1908 when an interchange was built between the previously separate (and differently named) Northern Line and Central Line stations at the present Tottenham Court Road.

It is one of the few tube stations that still rely on lifts rather than escalators to transport passengers to and from street level. In addition, it is one of the few tube stations with lifts to use the original scheme of separate exit and entrance areas.

Goodge Street is one of eight London Underground stations which has a World War II deep-level air-raid shelter underneath it. From late 1943 until the end of World War II, the Goodge Street shelter was used by SHAEF - the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. The shelter has two entrances - one on Chenies Street and the other on Tottenham Court Road next to the American Church.

In the invasion preparations, the Goodge Street Station was used only as a signals installation by the Signal Corps of the US Army. It was one of a number of signals installations for communications in and around London. Among the installations were SHAEF headquarters at 20 Grosvenor Square and the Basement of Selfridge's Department store on Oxford Street. Both buildings exist today. After the war the shelters were used as a hostel that could accommodate up to 8000 troops.
