Shepherd’s Bush Market is a station on both the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines.

The Metropolitan Railway (MR) opened the original station on 13 June 1864 as Shepherd’s Bush on its new extension to Hammersmith. From 1 October 1877 until 31 December 1906 the MR also ran direct services along this line to Richmond via Hammersmith (Grove Road).

The original Shepherd’s Bush station closed in 1914 to be replaced by two new stations which opened on 1 April 1914: the new Shepherd’s Bush station resited a short distance north across the Uxbridge Road, and Goldhawk Road about half a kilometre to the south. Those stations remain in those locations but nothing exists of the former station buildings in the marketplace.

In 1900 the Central London Railway (CLR) opened its Shepherd’s Bush station, now the Central line station, at the other end of Shepherd’s Bush Green. For 108 years there were two Tube stations of the same name a third of a mile apart.

In 2008 the new London Overground Shepherd’s Bush railway station was opened on the West London Line. To avoid the confusion of three stations named Shepherd’s Bush, the Hammersmith & City line station was renamed Shepherd’s Bush Market on 12 October 2008. The other two on the Central line and the West London line are next to each other.

Loosen Britain’s green belt. It is stunting our young people | Jonn Elledge
With demand for properties now urgent, protecting so much land is a luxury Britain can no longer affordWhere I grew up, on the Essex fringe of London, there’s a street that was never finished. The numbering of Goodwood Avenue, Hornchurch, begins at around 350 but before it reaches 200 the road just stops. Beyond, there’s nothing but marshy fields stretching out to the Thames, four miles away. This particular estate was begun in the 1930s when the capital was still expanding. But it was left unfinished after the second world war, when preventing sprawl was the order of the day. The creation of the metropolitan green belt fixed the boundaries of London as wherever the suburbs happened to stop. So Goodwood Avenue stops midway at an unconvincing simulacrum of countryside that’s hemmed in by homes on three sides. There are two tube stations within a mile, yet despite the housing shortage, there’s no building on this land. Not because it’s unsuitable; simply because nobody’s ever built there.’The simple, depressing truth is that most people who own homes in the suburbs don’t want those suburbs to expand’ Related: Green belt is more likely to be wasteland than a slice of countryside The good news is that we really don’t need much green belt land to fix this Continue reading...

The Underground Map

The Underground Map is a website dedicated to some of the more obscure pieces of London Town (as well as some of the more well-known places).

The Underground Map project is creating a decade-by-decade series of historical maps of the area which lies within London's M25 ring.

From the 1800s until the 1950s, you can see how London grew from a city which only reached as far as Park Lane into the post war megapolis we know today.

Find the streets of London by clicking STREETS above or explore the maps by clicking MAP.

The Underground Map works best if you log in using Facebook.

LOCATIONS ON THE UNDERGROUND MAP
Goldhawk Road:   Goldhawk Road station lies on the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines.
Shepherd's Bush Market:   Shepherd’s Bush Market is a street market located on the east side of the railway viaduct for the Hammersmith and City Tube line.
Wood Lane:   Although Wood Lane is on an Underground Line which has been in operation since 1864, the station is newer.

John Rocque (c. 1709–1762) was a surveyor, cartographer, engraver, map-seller and the son of Huguenot émigrés. Roque is now mainly remembered for his maps of London. This map dates from the second edition produced in 1762. London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. His widow continued the business after his death. The map covers an area from Greenford in the northwest to Hammersmith in the southeast.
