In 1875 Hampstead Heath was acquired for the people by the Metropolitan Board of Works. Thirteen years later Parliament Hill was purchased for the public for £300 000 and added to Hampstead Heath. It has been administered by the City of London Corporation since 1989.It is a popular place that is used by walkers, runners and kite flyers.

Parliament Hill is 98 metres high and notable for its excellent views of the capital’s skyline - to Canary Wharf, the Gherkin, the Shard and St Paul’s Cathedral.

It is known particularly as a cross-country running venue and hosted the 2009 English National Championships. The 2012 English National Cross Country Championships were also staged at Parliament Hill.

I am trying to find any information out about 3 Erskine Road. NW3. I have just come across an old identity card which was my Grandmothers, dated 1946 , this being where she then lived. If anyone can give me any information about this area then, or old photographs, that would be really good.

I lived at 2 Rudall Crescent until myself and my family moved out in 1999. I once met a lady in a art fair up the road who was selling old photos of the area and was very knowledgeable about the area history, collecting photos over the years. She told me that before the current houses were built, there was a large manor house , enclosed by a large area of land. She told me there had been a fire there. Im trying to piece together the story and find out what was on the land before the crescent was built. This website is very interesting.

Just over 150 years ago, 19 students were smuggled out of Japan - against government policy and using assumed names – from a quiet harbour in Kagoshima on the west coast of Japan, which was at the time officially isolated from the rest of the world.

They travelled to University College London, in what is now the London Borough of Camden, to see the industrial, economic, technological, social and governmental changes revolutionising Victorian Britain.

The students took back their learning and transformed and modernised Japan, establishing it as an Asian powerhouse. This little-known chapter of history was celebrated last summer with the signing of an official Friendship Agreement between Camden and Kagoshima and a visit to our borough by 15 Japanese students.

Now, the story is being told for a wider audience in a fascinating and c

Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath railway station has been part of the London Overground since 11 November 2007.

In the nineteenth century up to 100,000 people per day used the station at weekends and on public holidays as the Heath was a popular holiday destination for Londoners. The station was rebuilt, after Second World War bomb damage, and in the 1990s in conjunction with works to allow Eurostar trains to use the North London Line.

John Rocque Map of Hampstead (1762).
John Rocque (c. 1709–1762) was a surveyor, cartographer, engraver, map-seller and the son of Huguenot émigrés. Roque is now mainly remembered for his maps of London. This map dates from the second edition produced in 1762. London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. His widow continued the business after his death. The map of Hampstead covers an area stretching from the edge in the northwest of present-day Dollis Hill to Islington in the southeast.
