Connecting Camden’s homeless people with local employers
Mayor of Camden Richard Cotton held an event to promote the jobs club run by his chosen charity C4WS at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel on Friday (10 November). The event invited local employers including Camden Markets, Pret a Manger and KX Recruit to connect with the jobs club, which seeks to work with homeless people, to rebuild their lives and get them into work. The event included keynote speeches from the Mayor, Councillor Nadia Shah and MP for Holborn and St Pancras Sir Keir Starmer, as well as a success story from a C4WS graduate whose life has been transformed by the charity’s employment support. C4WS Homeless Project’s Jobs Club support people with experience of homelessness to become job-ready and secure work so that they can build a successful future. They work with motivated and hard-working individuals who undertake a training programme with C4WS and graduates of the training programme are supported through placements by mentors. The Mayor said : ‘Local employers will discover that there is a great deal of talent hidden in doorways and C4WS helps to train, support and nurture that talent as part of rebuilding people’s lives.’ C4WS’s jobs clubs are essential in creating links between homeless communities and the world of work, building the bridges service users need to reintegrate with society.

Frank Holder obituary
Singer and percussionist who toured with Nat King Cole and Billy Eckstine and performed with the Johnny Dankworth SevenFrank Holder, who has died aged 92, forged a lengthy career on the London jazz scene that encompassed everything from singing with big-name bands to solo appearances on cabaret and supper club circuits. Along the way he taught himself to play the conga drums and bongos, adding his percussive skills to jazz rhythm sections and later functioning as a kind of one-man variety act, incorporating a few dance steps and always singing with sensitivity and gusto. From 1950 he sang with the Johnny Dankworth Seven, played percussion for Joe Harriott, gave a young Cleo Laine tips in stagecraft and shared tours with Nat King Cole and Billy Eckstine. In his later career there were associations with the top Latin group Paz, and with Pete Long’s Gillespiana, a big band that recreated Dizzy Gillespie’s music, plus a series of fine albums on the Mainstem label, his accompanists all top contemporary jazz musicians. Frank performed in venues small and large, for ever on the go until very recently. Continue reading...

John Rocque Map of Hampstead (1762).
John Rocque (c. 1709–1762) was a surveyor, cartographer, engraver, map-seller and the son of Huguenot émigrés. Roque is now mainly remembered for his maps of London. This map dates from the second edition produced in 1762. London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. His widow continued the business after his death. The map of Hampstead covers an area stretching from the edge in the northwest of present-day Dollis Hill to Islington in the southeast.
