A rare view of Thrift Farm, before the creation of the "Studio Estate".

Thift Farm taken from stills in the TV series "The Prisoner"
This is a shot from the series "The Prisoner". This view today would have these people running across Studio Way with the camera at a point hovering above the end of Niven Close.

Thrift Farm was purchased by MGM in the late 1940s when they incorporated it into their massive backlot. The farm continued to be used with sheep grazing on the front fields of the MGM studio. It closed in 1970 when the studio closed and was subsequently demolished. The foundations can still be seen in the foliage off the path behind the Toby Carvery/Hotel

No, it?s not the parade of shops you mention, it?s Middle Row which was demolished in 1889 and was situated to the south of the parish church literally in the middle of the High Street!

Post by Georgina Dorsett ( nee Peters ): Thrift Farm

My parents moved to 1 Thrift Farm lane Borehamwood in 1947 from London, the farm was next to their house, it was a dirt track leading to the house. In front of our house was a cornfield we often had pigs come in our front garden and i would walk to the farm to see the animals particularly the sheep. They built a tarmac road when Holmshill school was built, and we no longer had a wonderful view of lovely cornfields was such a shame.

We moved to 12 Wansford Park during August 1960, moving out during 1967.

My parents had managed to wangle themselves into a house in London W10 which was due to be demolished by the local council. Thus the council moved them into a much better place (inside toilet!) opposite Tempsford Green in Borehamwood.

My mother worked at Keystones in the 1940 before she was married.

She later worked at home which a lot of people did. You would often see people walking around Boreham Wood with boxes filled with piecework for the factory.

Borehamwood

Borehamwood is a town of approximately 30 000 residents in southern Hertfordshire, just outside London, and part of the London commuter belt.

Borehamwood, more commonly called Boreham Wood before the LCC estate was built, is part of the borough of Hertsmere. The town is often associated with the nearby village Elstree (being part of the ancient parish of Elstree), the two still share a local council, now called the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council.

The A1 passes just to the east of the town, and the M25 passes about two miles north of it.

Since the 1920s, the town has been the location of several film studios. The former British National Studios on Clarendon Road are now the BBC’s Elstree Television Studios. One of BBC’s popular soaps, EastEnders, is produced at the BBC studios, as well as popular medical drama Holby City. ’Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’, ’Big Brother’ and major feature films are filmed at the Elstree Studios in Shenley Road.
