Southgate village originated as a tiny hamlet, which grew up in the north-west corner of Edmonton parish, along the southern boundary of Enfield Chase.

The name derived from the south gate of Enfield Chase, which stood roughly where Chase Road now joins Winchmore Hill Road. The area was originally very heavily wooded, with large estates of oak coppice woods; the last remains of the woodland can be seen in Grovelands Park. Enfield Chase was enclosed in 1777. On the 1803 enclosure map, the settlement is called Chase Side after its main thoroughfare, and what is now Southgate Green is called Southgate. On this map, the four roads which form the crossroads – Chase Side, Bourneside, Chase Road and High Street – are quite densely developed near the junction, with long narrow frontage plots and more generous larger houses in substantial grounds.

Much of the land formed part of the large Grovelands and Arnos estates. The early railways in the mid 19th century gave Southgate a wide berth because of its hilly terrain and, until the arrival of the Piccadilly line extension, the nearest station to Southgate town centre was Palmers Green, built in 1871 and with a horse-bus link to Southgate town centre.

Southgate station opened on 13 March 1933 with Oakwood on the second phase of the northern extension of the Piccadilly line from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters. Prior to the station’s opening, alternative names were suggested including ’Chase Side’ and ’Southgate Central’. On opening, local residents were given a free return ticket to Piccadilly Circus

We lived here from 1991 until 2008. Southgate and Oakwood stations within walking distance - Oakwood the nearest. A lovely, green and spacious area with Trent Country Park a few minutes walk (opposite Oakwood Station). Good transport links to London/Enfield/Hertfordshire. Unfortunately the opening of Asda Supermarket led to a decline of the area with many of the shops closing. When we left in 2008, many of the shops were open and it was a thriving high street. Iconic Art Deco Southgate station is a sight to see. Even Oakwood station has some Art Deco features - the old newsagent kiosk. Southagate is full of history too.

There was a large dairy when we moved there, but overtime this closed and was replaced with houses (where isn?t?). Enfield Town and Gentleman?s Row are worth a visit. First cash machine at the Barclays Bank in Enfield Town

Lived with my parents at number 18 from 1963 to 1981, briefly moved back for a while but moved on in 1987. Remember riding my scooter in the 60?s and in my soap box that my grandad made, he lived at number 27 from after WW1 till 1976. Great days playing football against the wall on the corner of Burghley Rd and Lyttleton Rd with my mates from the adjoining road. Now live in North Norfolk but often think back to Hornsey and Stationers Company School.

I have a question rather than a comment. When was 80 Hutton Grove built? My parents, Eddie and Margaret Hapgood, lived at 80 Hutton Grove from 1934 until sometime during the war,and I would love to know if they moved into a new-build house during the big suburban expansion in the 1930s. Does anyone out there know?! I visited very recently to see the road and the frontage of the house for the first time.

Coleraine Works was the informal name given to a small industrial building – just to the right of the photo shown – on the corner of Poynton Road and Wycombe Road.

This last housed a printer and has been empty for several years as the council refuse to let it pass into non-commercial use.

Southgate
