Map of Clapham Common (1890s map)

Clapham in the last years of the nineteenth century, was an area in transition. It had been an area of serious wealth with large houses 'in the country' for the heads of industry in the City.

With the coming of the railways, and the tube, Clapham became more accessible and land values rose. Housing covered much open land and many large houses around the Common were sold off to developers.
