Beckton Gasworks (1869)

The partially completed Beckton Gasworks during a site visit by the directors of the Gas Light & Coke Company.

Beckton was named after the president of the company, Simon Adams Beck - it was the largest gas plant in the world when it opened in 1870.

Beckton is thus one of the many areas of London named after 19th century factory owners or property developers - Cubitt Town, Camden Town and Somers Town being others.
