The Avenue, Finsbury Park (early 1900’s) Old London postcard TUM image id: 1620384821 Licence:	The motorisation of London taxis began in the early 20th century. This can be seen here with this motor hansom cab on a standard 1905 Vauxhall chassis, but with the controls changed over so the driver can operate them from the rear and aloft. If the date of the photo is correct, people were preparing rather early. There do not appear to be any blackout deflectors on the headlamps so presumably before 1939 - certainly before 1941 when Wood Green would have been subsumed into the National Fire Service. After the war, Wood Green became part of the Middlesex Fire Service and then part of the London Fire Brigade under the Greater London Council in 1965 when the borough became part of the London Borough of Haringey. In the background can be seen the railway buildings on the Kings Cross main line to the north, an area of later interest to Nazi bombers during the Blitz. Shopping in Green Lanes, Harringay (1960s) These early crossings were very distinctive - there was an animated “matchstick man” when you could cross who came to a standstill when you shouldn’t TUM image id: 1660661895 Licence:	Harringay Festival on Green Lanes (2009) Whilst it is undeniably an ancient thoroughfare, the age and origin of Green Lanes is somewhat uncertain. It possibly originated as a drovers’ road along which cattle were walked from Hertfordshire to London. But its origins may date back as far as the Roman period. The street runs from the centre of Crouch End at the clock tower, north to the junction of the High Street and Turnpike Lane. The narrowness of Tottenham Lane, the height of the buildings and continuous frontage gives it considerable sense of enclosure. John Rogers theorises in one of his videos that the architect was used to designing seaside promenades the same building styles of which were employed here too with a different effect. As the houses were built the space over the Hornsey Outfall Sewer became a footpath - Harringay Passage The photo shows work in the early 1900s between Fairfax and Frobisher roads; the houses had to be supported to prevent collapse. The number of coats hanging on the wall shows the job provided work for several men.
