Map of Clapham Common (1890s map) Clapham in the last years of the nineteenth century, was an area in transition. It had been an area of serious wealth with large houses "in the country" for the heads of industry in the City. With the coming of the railways, and the tube, Clapham became more accessible and land values rose. Housing covered much open land and many large houses around the Common were sold off to developers. I have long been fascinated by both the tale of Victorian bogeyman Spring-heeled Jack and also the mysterious Devil’s Footprints. In this video I get to tell the tale of both. What’s more, we’re in the company of Dr Stephen King who guides up across Clapham Common, visiting the Deep Level Shelter, the Bandstand, the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and more.
