Hanover Square was created as the ’Whig’ square with Cavendish Square being the ’Tory’ square.

Hanover Square dates from 1713 and many of the original residents were staunch military supporters of the 1714 Hanoverian succession.

Richard Lumley was the Earl of Scarbrough who had been instrumental in the so-called ’Glorious Revolution’ of 1688. "Early Hanover Square was decidedly Whig and most decidedly military" comments the architectural historian Sir John Summerson.

Some of the 18th-century houses remain but most of the square underwent later development.
