Northampton Square is a square between Finsbury and Clerkenwell, located between Goswell Road and St John Street.
Northampton Square took its name from the local landowner, the Marquess of Northampton.
The square has historically housed jewellers, silversmiths and clockmakers. By 1878, 35 Northampton Square was the home of the British Horological Institute but by the 1960s these trades had left the area and the buildings were a mixture of flats and offices.
The Northampton Institute opened in the Square in 1896. This institute evolved to become The City University housed on the north side of Northampton Square.
A fountain in the square commemorates the 1885 restoration of the gardens.
