57 flats were built in The Orchard in 1909, one of the earliest developments of Hampstead Garden Suburb.
Dame Henrietta Barnett wanted to make special provision in Hampstead Garden Suburb for the elderly. The Orchard was one of Parker and Unwin’s best designs. It is a tragedy that it fell into such disrepair that it has had to be demolished. Originally, a court was enclosed on all four sides, the path running through an arch to the east and through an opening between terraces to the west.
