Crown Street was a former street in this area.

Prior to the Second World War, Canning Town was a multi-ethnic area. The Coloured Men’s Institute was established in Crown Street.

The South Hallsville School bomb decimated the community. It fell on September 8/9, 1940, killing 600 sheltering during an air raid.
