Warner Yard was named after Robert Warner, local 18th century landowner.
Theologian Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) had a defining vision at the Red Lion Inn, then situated down the Warner Yard courtyard. He became best known for his book on the afterlife, Heaven and Hell (1758).
