West Hendon Broadway, NW9
West Hendon Broadway in the 1950s
West Hendon Broadway is part of the Edgware Road.

Watling Street here passed over both the Brent stream and Silk stream. In 1389, six people including John atte Hegge of Hendon were to repair the road. By 1621 both the Brent and Silk bridges were it such a state of disrepair that they formed a serious danger to travellers. They were improved on multiple occasions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Brent Bridge became known as Harp bridge in 1826 due to its proximity to the Welsh Harp inn, but later reverted to its original name. Both bridges were rebuilt with the construction of Brent (Welsh Harp) reservoir and they disappeared in the 1920s, when the rivers were made to pass under the road in culverts. The Hendon section of the Edgware Road was turnpiked in 1711.
