William Road dates from 1799 or before.

William Road, as its former name of ’Frederick Street’, first appears on the 1799 Horwood map as a small, named cul-de-sac off of Hampstead Road.

There was, as usual in pre-1870s street naming, a confusion of streetnames, which is why the Post Office finally decided to sort things out. There were two William Streets parallel with one another. The first was one block north of Frederick Street. The second William Street was the western extension of Frederick Street - now also combined into William Road.
