Previously Upper Rupert Street, Winnett Street was ultimately named after local eigteenth-century glass merchant Thomas Winnet

The area on the west side of this section of Wardour Street was part of the Laystall, Vesey’s Garden and Watts’s Close. Building commenced shortly after the Earl of St Albans was granted the freehold in 1676. Blome’s map indicates that this development was finished by 1689.

Upper Rupert Street became Winnett Street in 1935.
