Malden Road is parallel to Essex Road.

The Earl of Essex was a major Hertfordshire landowner and who was based at Cassiobury in Watford. The Earl of Essex had been created Viscount Malden in 1661.

The aristocrat’s full title was ’Earl of Essex and Clarendon’ - hence the adjacent Clarendon Road as well.
