Bell Common
Epping
Bell Common is a large area of open space in Epping.

Bell Common lies on a ridge about 350ft above sea level where the soil is mainly London clay with belts of boulder clay.

Because Bell Common is situated on the ridge, there are good views of the surrounding landscape.

The 470 metre-long Bell Common Tunnel is a covered section of the M25 motorway. The route of the then-new motorway at this point was forced into a very narrow gap between the ecologically important Epping Forest to the south and the settlements to the north. The decision was made to put the motorway underground and the tunnel was constructed between 1982 and 1984.
