Alexander Place, SW7
Horse bus outside South Kensington station, early 1900s.
Alexander Place was originally called Alfred Place East.

Originally a simple cul-de-sac, like many streets named ’Alfred’, it was renamed to stop duplication of names. Alexander Place was named after the family of W.H. Alexander, who gifted the London Portrait Gallery to London in 1896.

Alexander Square was called for an earlier member of the same family.
