Fownes Street, named in 1937, was formerly known as Newman Street.

The street’s namesake, the Fownes family, was prominent in the glove-making industry throughout the 19th century. They operated a factory in close proximity to the street before relocating their business to Worcester.

The Fownes family also held ownership of the land upon which the adjacent Falcon Park estate was developed, commencing in 1879.

The street was very badly damaged during the Second World War. Five prefabs were erected but then the street was redeveloped in 1959, running in a different line as part of the Falcon Terrace Estate.
