Galway Street was named for the Earl of Galway.

Henri du Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny, was created the Earl of Galway in 1691. He was a Governor of the French Hospital.

Like other streets in the immediate area, it dates from the 1820s.

Before 1877 part of the street was called Little Galway Street.

After the Second World War, the road layout was changed as old housing was demolished and new estates built..
