Neate Street dates from the 1820s.
It was redeveloped as part of Burgess Park, though the street remains without the housing. Houses were demolished in 1972-1973. Neate Street originally ran on to Wells Way.
Part of the street was called Brunswick Road before 1865.
It was a major site for post-war prefabs and an R. Whites Factory was in the street. This opened in 1887 on the previous site of a floor cloth manufactory. It was demolished in the 1970s.
