Gardener’s Road, E3
Mile End
Gardener’s Road made way for Mile End Park.

Originally, the area surrounding Victoria Park was designated for the development of middle-class housing. However, this plan did not succeed as intended, and instead, it was the upper-lower class, primarily skilled artisans, who ended up occupying these homes. The development of Wennington Road and Ashwell Road commenced first, starting in 1845, coinciding with the establishment of two docks in the vicinity. Subsequently, in the 1880s, Gardener’s Road was added, although there was some residential development even before the road’s inclusion. Ashwell and Gardener’s Roads derived their names from the developers involved in their creation.
