Blackwall Way, E14
Blackwall
Blackwall Way dates from the seventeenth century.

Blackwall Way - previously known as Blackwall Causeway and Brunswick Street dates from 1618 when William Burrell bought a strip of land from Poplar High Street to build a causeway. The causeway connected the High Street to Blackwall Stairs and the river. Travellers arriving by boat could disembark here at Blackwall and take a coach to London. Burrell leased it to the East India Company who set up a toll booth to charge vehicles though pedestrians went free.

There are slight recent realignments in the course of the road and Blackwall Way no longer goes to the riverside. There are now gated developments in the area.
