York Place marks the location of a house on this site.

York Place was built on the site in the 14th century for the bishops of Norwich. Demolished in the 1670s, a series of streets were built here commemorating the name of York House’s final owner: George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham.

Before saner road namers got to work, York Place was called ’Of Alley’.
