Vine Street roughly followed the route of the contemporary pathway between York Road and the South Bank, beside Waterloo underground station.

Originally Vine Street extended from Waterloo Station across York Road to Belvedere Road. It was already in place by the time of the John Rocque map when the rest of the area was fields.

The Vine tavern was recorded here in 1761.
