Aycliffe Road is one of the major roads in the north of the Borehamwood estate.

Boreham Wood – as it was spelled then – was a small village until the 1950s when there was a rapid expansion to provide housing for families relocated from North London. Separate estates, each with their own parade of shops, were built; and a main shopping street, Shenley Road.

Aycliffe Road, along with Gateshead Road were designed as parallel major arteries running east from Theobald Street to Cowley Hill. Aycliffe Road’s route east is eventually blocked by high ground, which is still unbuilt upon, and so turns south to meet Gateshead Road.

Halfway along the road is a parade of shops which adjoins the Leeming Road retail area.

Aycliffe Road has always formed part of the parade route of the Borehamwood Carnival Parade which is held annually. This important event in the civic life of the town starts in Brook Road car park on a Saturday in June and proceeds via Shenley Road, Theobald Street, Aycliffe Road and Leeming Road before completing the circuit.
