Braithwaite House was built in 1949 by the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar.
Braithwaite House comprised a large T-shaped block of 105 flats, situated on the Abbott Road housing scheme, just west of where Abbott Road meets Blair Street.
The building was named in honour of Mrs Margaret Braithwaite, the first woman air raid warden to lose her life on duty in Poplar during the Second World War. This naming choice reflected Poplar’s desire to commemorate citizens who served in its Civil Defence during the conflict.
In 1983, the Braithwaite House Tenants Association was established in response to the local authority’s plans for a major improvement programme. Tenants were notified of these extensive improvement plans in July 1982, with the first public meeting called by the council in May 1983.
Braithwaite House was demolished some time between 2003 and 2010.
