D’Arblay Street was laid out between 1735 and 1744 and initially bore the name Portland Street in honour of William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland. In 1909, the street underwent a name change to commemorate Frances Burney, also known as Madame D’Arblay. Frances Burney had previously resided in nearby Poland Street during her youth.
The George public house, located at No. 1 D’Arblay Street, has its roots dating back to 1739 when a tavern was first established on the site. The current iteration of The George was opened in 1889.
