I lived in Giraud St in 1938/1939. I lived with my Mother May Lillian Allen & my brother James Allen (Known as Lenny) My name is Tom Allen and was evacuated to Surrey from Giraud St. I am now 90 years of age.

Limehouse Causeway (1908)
My great grandparents were the first to live in 15 Tomlins Terrace, then my grandparents and parents after marriage. I spent the first two years of my life there. My nan and her family lived at number 13 Tomlins Terrace. My maternal grandmother lived in Maroon house, Blount Street with my uncle. Nan, my mum and her brothers were bombed out three times during the war.

I lived at 7 Conder Street in a prefab from roughly 1965 to 1971 approx - happy memories- sad to see it is no more ?

My grandmother and Grandfather moved into St Leonards Avenue in 1904 and and lived there until her death in 1966. I lived there for the first 7 years of my life, and I was born in Bromley by Bow hospital

Momentous Birth!
I was born in the upstairs front room of 28 Tyrrell Avenue in August 1938. I was a breach birth and quite heavy ( poor Mum!). My parents moved to that end of terrace house from another rental in St Mary Cray where my three year older brother had been born in 1935. The estate was quite new in 1938 and all the properties were rented. My Father was a Postman. I grew up at no 28 all through WWII and later went to Little Dansington School

Bombing of Arbour Square in the Blitz
On the night of September 7, 1940. Hyman Lubosky (age 35), his wife Fay (or Fanny)(age 32) and their son Martin (age 17 months) died at 11 Arbour Square. They are buried together in Rainham Jewish Cemetery. Their grave stones read: "Killed by enemy action"

Tenant at Westbourne (1807 - 1811)
I think that the 3rd Marquess Townshend - at that time Lord Chartley - was a tenant living either at Westbourne Manor or at Bridge House. He undertook considerable building work there as well as creating gardens. I am trying to trace which house it was. Any ideas gratefully received

Late opening
The tracks through Roding Valley were opened on 1 May 1903 by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) on its Woodford to Ilford line (the Fairlop Loop).

But the station was not opened until 3 February 1936 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER, successor to the GER).

Roding Valley is the quietest tube station, each year transporting the same number of passengers as Waterloo does in one day.

At 58m below ground, Hampstead is as deep as Nelson’s Column is tall.

Not as Central as advertised...
Hendon Central was by no means the centre of Hendon when built, being a green field site. It was built at the same time as both the North Circular Road and the A41 were built as major truck roads �’ an early example of joined up London transport planning.

Cubitt Town

This section of Poplar was developed as part of the Port of London in 1840s and 1850s by William Cubitt, Lord Mayor of London (1860–1862).

Cubitt Town lies on the eastern side of the Isle of Dogs. William Cubitt was responsible for the early housing which accommodated the growing population of dockworkers and shipbuilders.

Along with the housing, Cubitt also created many local businesses.

Bangladeshi and East Asian immigrant populations became established after the 1950s.

During the 1960s and 1970s, high-rise estates began to be built and during the 1990s and afterwards, the Canary Wharf complex attracted a different mix of people.

Alpha Grove (1962) Alpha Grove (previously Alpha Road) runs from Strafford Street to Tiller Road on the Isle of Dogs. Alpha Grove ran right through to the West India Dock fence dock - its cranes can be seen at the end of the road. When built in the 1800s, Alpha Road followed a section of the old island path, Dolphin Lane. The road running across the view in the photo is Byng Street.

’Blood Alley’ in the West India Docks, circa 1930. This photograph was taken at the North Quay shows a gang of dockers trucking bags of sugar beneath an awning of washed sacks that are hung out for drying at. ‘Blood Alley’ was the nickname given to roadway between the transit sheds and sugar warehouses because handling the sacks of sticky West Indian sugar badly chafed and cracked the dockers’ skin. This quay is now home to the Museum of London Docklands

Canary Wharf: West India Dock North Floating Footbridge (2018) The footbridge joins Wren’s Landing on Canary Wharf, from which this photograph was taken, with the North Quay of the West India Dock North. The footbridge was opened in 1996 and floats on a series of pontoons. The footbridge is about 94 metres long, covering an open water span of about 84 metres, and narrows towards its centre.
