St Paul’s Girls’ School is an independent school which accepts students between the ages of 10 and 19.
It was founded by the Worshipful Company of Mercers in 1904, using part of the endowment of the foundation set up by John Colet, to create a girls’ school to complement the boys’ school he had founded in the sixteenth century. It is categorised as a Church of England school.
The school is listed Grade II, is a symmetrical red brick and stone composition by Gerald Horsley built between 1903 and 1911. The boundary gates, wall and railings are also listed, as is the Gustav Holst Music Wing annex built in 1913. This was named in honour of the composer who had been Music Director at the school from 1905, and was where he wrote several suites including ’The Planets’, ‘The St Paul’s Suite’ (1913) and ‘The Brook Green Suite’ (1933).
The total school capacity is 748.
