Swears and Wells stood at its demise, at 374 Oxford Street, opposite Bond Street tube station.
Established in 1816, Swears and Wells was originally located at 192 Regent Street and were outfitters, hosiers and glovesellers.
Thomas William Wells was in partnership with Frederick Swears and his two brothers until Thomas Wells retired in 1884.
Originally in Regent Street, the store moved to Oxford Street in the 1930s. It became a national chain of furriers.
Swears and Wells was added to the United Drapery Stores business in 1969. The name continued until at least the mid-1970s.
Swear and Wells is a department store in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels - a rival to Crumley’s and Horrids. It is renowned for its upmarket food hall which boasts an unparalleled selection of imported Überwaldean food and drink.
