Bridge House Farm stood beside Upminster Bridge - the bridge over the Ingrebourne River.

Bridge House Farm occupied an area beside the river both north and south of St Mary’s Lane.

In the Middle Ages it was a small manor, partly owned by New College, Oxford.

By 1663 Bridge House Farm was listed as being of 79 acres - 33 acres was south of St Mary’s Lane, and 46 acres was found to the north of the road. It was owned by Sir Nathan Wright of Cranham Hall. This land from the river into the centre of Upminster.

Nathan Wright sold the estate in 1729 and after some changes of ownership, settled with Thomas Newman in 1783. William Nokes, brother of James Nokes of Hunts Farm, took on the tenancy of the farm. In 1801, some 23 acres of the farmland north of the road was bought by Nokes who built his smock mill there from 1803 onwards. The whole farm was sold in 1849 after Nokes’ death.

The new owner was a Mr Emanuel of London. He demolished the old farmhouse and built a new one on the site.

The area to the north of St Mary’s Farm became the route of a new railway line with infilling of new buildings including a gasometer.

In 1910 Bridge House was bought by Edwin Battson who owned a dairy in Station Road, Upminster. This brought a halt to farming activities and the area to the south of the road was then developed to form Bridge Avenue after the First World War.

Hornchurch Urban District Council acquired just over five acres of the former farmland in 1950 built a football pitch in 1952 and an athletics track in 1956 – now Hornchurch Stadium.

Opposite the site of Bridge House Farm on the north side of St Mary’s Lane are the Grade 2 listed eighteenth-century Ingrebourne Cottages, built as the parish workhouse.

Vickers Road
The road ’Vickers Road’ is numbered rather differently to other roads in the area as it was originally built as housing for the "Vickers" arms factory in the late 1800’s and early 1900s. Most of the houses still retain the original 19th century tiling and drainage outside of the front doors.
