As World War One opened, Germany invaded hitherto-neutral Belgium causing an influx of Belgian refugees.

Both Richmond-upon-Thames and Twickenham across the river opened their homes and their hearts to the refugees.

For four years between 1914 and 1918, these two communities became a little 'Belgium beyond Belgium'.
