St John's Gate, Clerkenwell

This medieval gate, following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, became the office of the Master of the Revels - the Elizabethan censor - who had the task of licensing Shakespeare's plays to ensure they complied with the rigid rules laid down by the Tudor regime
