The Thames (1931)

The view is looking southwest from the southern end of Waterloo Bridge. It is not only 1931 but probably the 1 September, the first day of the Triennial International Illumination Congress which took place until 25th September when all the major buildings were floodlit for one month between 9pm and midnight.

On that first night it was estimated that over one million extra people were in Central London, the traffic congestion was the worst that London had ever seen.

The 1931 congress turned its attention to the standardisation of lamp bases and sockets which were then and are still now, Bayonet and Edison screw.
