Walford

Walford is a fictional borough of east London in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

The name Walford is both a street in Dalston where one of the series’ creators, Tony Holland, lived and a blend of Walthamstow, where Holland was born, and Stratford. The suffix ’ford’ is also found throughout East London, for example, South Woodford. Walford’s London postcode district is E20 (real East London postcode districts only went up to E18 until 2011, when E20 was introduced to serve the London 2012 Olympic Park).

Walford’s fictional tube station, Walford East, is located on the EastEnders tube map in the position normally occupied by the real Bromley-by-Bow tube station.

I was a breach birth and quite heavy ( poor Mum!). My parents moved to that end of terrace house from another rental in St Mary Cray where my three year older brother had been born in 1935. The estate was quite new in 1938 and all the properties were rented. My Father was a Postman. I grew up at no 28 all through WWII and later went to Little Dansington School Reply

Hyman Lubosky (age 35), his wife Fay (or Fanny)(age 32) and their son Martin (age 17 months) died at 11 Arbour Square. They are buried together in Rainham Jewish Cemetery. Bromley-by-Bow

Bromley-by-Bow is a district located on the western banks of the River Lea, in the Lower Lea Valley in east London.

The area is distinct from Bow, which lies immediately to the north and east. The area has become better known as Bromley-by-Bow due to Bromley tube station being renamed to Bromley-by-Bow in 1967, to prevent confusion with Bromley railway station in the London Borough of Bromley. Over time the station’s name has become applied to the district itself.

Bromley-by-Bow was opened as a railway station called ’Bromley’ by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway in 1858.

The construction of the Whitechapel and Bow Railway allowed the District Railway to start serving the station in 1902. Electrification of the system followed in 1905.

The District Railway was incorporated into London Transport in 1933 and the Hammersmith & City line (then part of the Metropolitan line) started operating services through Bromley on 4 May 1936.

Lochnagar Street, looking east towards Islay Wharf Before the coming of the Blackwall Tunnel approach road, there was a road called Brunswick Road from which Lochnagar Street ran and from which this photo was taken. This area of Poplar contains a large number of streets with Scottish names because they were built on an estate which had been bought by the McIntosh family in 1823. The initial letters of local street names were chosen alphabetically - Aberfeldy Street, Ailsa Street, Blair Street, Culloden Street, Dee Street, Ettrick Street, Findhorn Street, Leven Road, Oban Street, Portree Street, Spey Street, Teviot Street, Wyvis Street and Zetland Street.
