The motorisation of London taxis began in the early 20th century. This can be seen here with this motor hansom cab on a standard 1905 Vauxhall chassis, but with the controls changed over so the driver can operate them from the rear and aloft. St Ann’s Road railway station was opened by the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway on 2 October 1882. It was at the corner of St Ann’s Road and Seven Sisters Road in N15. It comprised two wooden platforms, accessed by a footbridge and stairs, and a brick building. The service at the station was generally between St Pancras or Kentish Town and Barking or Southend. It was never well used, mainly as it was near South Tottenham and Seven Sisters stations, the latter gave a much faster link to The City. The station was closed on 9 August 1942 as a wartime austerity measure and never reopened. The station building survived as a newsagents until October 2012, when the building was demolished. Credit: Geograph/Julian Osley TUM image id: 1614619254 Licence:	Tottenham Lane Tottenham Lane dates from the 18th century or before and is a shopping street with three-storey terraces of red brick. The street runs from the centre of Crouch End at the clock tower, north to the junction of the High Street and Turnpike Lane. The narrowness of Tottenham Lane, the height of the buildings and continuous frontage gives it considerable sense of enclosure. John Rogers theorises in one of his videos that the architect was used to designing seaside promenades the same building styles of which were employed here too with a different effect. As the houses were built the space over the Hornsey Outfall Sewer became a footpath - Harringay Passage The photo shows work in the early 1900s between Fairfax and Frobisher roads; the houses had to be supported to prevent collapse.
