The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon or The Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon since 1877. It was opened on 23 October 1926 in Southfields. At a cost of £6223, the construction of the mosque and the purchase of the land on which it stands, was financed by the donations of Ahmadi Muslim women in Qadian, Punjab, British India, with support from the British Muslim convert Khalid Sheldrake. Roehampton was originally a small village – with only 14 houses during the reign of Henry VII – with the area largely forest and heath. The population gradually increased in the 18th and 19th centuries as it became a favoured residential outlying suburb for summer villas and larger houses set in parkland, following the opening of Putney Bridge in 1729. In 1949, he started to collect money at Wimbledon Station on behalf of the Woking Railway Orphanage. In 1956, Laddie retired after seven years of service. During that time, he raised over £5000. He passed away, was stuffed and sent to the National Railway Museum at York where he can still be seen. They are works of beauty and clarity. Southfields District Line station would appear later at the centre of this extract on the site of the building called ’Elm Lodge’.
