St Alphonsus Road may have been first laid out in the 1860s as Park Place.

St Alphonsus Road has a confusing build history. A road called Park Place first appeared on mapping dating from the 1860s. This followed the line of the modern St Alphonsus Road between Holwood Place and Abbeville Road before turning sharp north to meet Clapham Park Road.

In the 1890s, Abbeville Road was extended north and took over the section of Park Place which had turned north. While the remainder of Park Place kept its name at the time, a new road called St Alphonsus Road was built in the 1890s west from the Holwood Place junction.

Finally in 1935, the Park Place name disappeared, and St Alphonsus Road took over the whole length of the existing St Alphonsus Road and the former Park Place.
