Stainsby Road was part of the Conant estate straddling the boundary with Limehouse.
Stainsby Road (and three streets leading off of it - Canton Street, Gough Street and Painton Street) was laid out in the late 1840s.
Building progress was initially slow with only 9 houses built by 1855 with, by then, 178 vacant plots.
Upper Stainsby Road became Stainsby Road in 1867 and by 1873 Stainsby Road’s street frontages were fully built up.
The northern part was destroyed during the Second World War and 16 prefabs were temporarily erected. After this, a rebuilt southern section became a new leg of Canton Street. Gough Walk and Kildare Walk were created at the same time.
