Angel Lane was formerly Angel Passage.

The Angel was one of the commonest medieval inn signs and gave its name to a multitude of streets.

In the mid-eighteenth century, there were 23 Angel Alleys and 30 Angel Courts in London.

Early Angel signs pictured the Annunciation to the Virgin. After the Reformation, Mary was omitted from the scene.
