The Castle is the only pub in England that, alongside its pub sign, is permitted to display the three balls of a pawnbroker.
A public house of this name has existed on this site since at least the 18th century.
The Castle was once visited by King George IV, who issued the landlord with a pawnbroker’s licence and handed over his gold watch to obtain cash after losing money on a cockfight.
The current building was opened on 21 November 1867 and designed by the architect H. Dawson.
