Clifton Hill began as sections either side of Abbey Road - Clifton Road and Clifton Road East.

West of Loudoun Road (at first Bridge Road), the land slopes to a shallow trough before rising again. The slope, together with the narrowness of the remaining sites originally imposed by the railway and Eyre estate boundary, contributed to higher-density, mostly terraced housing.
