Clapham Common Southside is part of the main road between London and Brighton.

On Clapham Common’s south side, the marshy land was drained in 1760, transforming it into a popular suburban residential area. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, impressive residences belonging to City merchants, philanthropists and notable figures like Samuel Pepys began to surround the Common.

The prominent houses on Clapham Common Southside, occupied by stockbrokers and affluent residents, remained largely unchanged from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. This area, also known as the Old Brighton Road, featured grand houses such as Eagle House, Eldon House, Cavendish House and The Clock House.
