Providence Cottages, E14
Westferry
Providence Cottages were situated off Emmett Street.

Providence Cottages were described in a 1903 Poplar Borough report as ’built in 1888’. They had been represented to the London County Council by the Poplar Borough’s Medical Officer of Health in 1919 as unhealthy and needing clearance, but in November 1929 the Borough decided to take action itself.

A clearance area covering 11 houses (Nos 1–8 Providence Cottages, and Nos 25–29, odd, Emmett Street) was confirmed in December 1931, and involved the rehousing of 70 people.

Providence House, a development of flats by Poplar Borough Council, was built on the now empty site, flanked by Emmett Street to the west, Bowley Street to the north, and Westferry Road to the east. Providence House was in turn demolished by Tower Hamlets Borough Council in 1981.
